Popis: Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate the seroprevalence of toxocara canis in children from rural communities in Croatia. Methods: To determine the local prevalence, a serology survey (IgG and IgM) has been undertaken on 53 children sera that were randomly selected from the hospital collection. The sera originated from children between 12 and 14 years hospitalized with different diagnosis but none of them under the diagnosis of any parasitic disease. The sera was examined by ordinary ELISA and DOT ELISA. The excretory secretory antigen used in test was prepared by the standard procedure. Results: Of 53 sera, 13, 2% (7 sera) were positive by ELISA and DOT ELISA (at dilution 1:1000). The positive sera were re screened at higher dilutions (up to 1:300). At the highest dilution (1:300), four of them were also found positive. Interestingly, other sera were found positive for thge presence of specific IgM. There were no correlation between IgG and IgM data. Conclusion: The figure indicates that a substantial proportion of the examined children has been confronted with the second stage larvae of Toxocara canis and it raises a definition that this canine parasite is still a real risk for rural children in our country. High OD values of IgM indicate that in some children recent ingestion of ova happened.
