Popis: Faba bean is a high protein legume crop widely used in human alimentation and livestock feeding. In particular, mature faba bean is a staple in the diets of many societies in the Middle East and North Africa, while green faba beans are a favoured vegetable in many countries. Though the agronomic and economic importance of faba bean is well demonstrated, its cultivation is still limited due to different factors. Breeding objectives must combine quality of the product with good yield performance which is often limited by the sensitivity of the crop to environmental conditions (especially cold and drought) and the high susceptibility to diseases and pests. The main goal of this contribution is to describe the state of the art of gene technology for genetic improvement of faba bean. The review will mainly focus on the application of marker technology, and Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) analysis for Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) in the species. Up to now, this has been the most significant genomic approach developed in faba bean to identify molecular markers tightly linked to genes of interest. The information obtained so far might facilitate the strategy for gene pyramiding and the future development of lines and cultivars with multiple resistance traits.
