Trauma is the leading cause of death in the pediatric population and abdominal injuries are the third leading cause of death after injuries of the head and chest. Abdominal injuries constitutes 2-5% of all injuries in children. Most resulting from traffic accidents, games and sport. There are two types of the abdominal injuries (open and blunt) and most of them (90%) are caused by blunt trauma. The clinical presentation depends on the severity of the injury, the injured organ and associated injuries. Early transport, better monitoring and diagnostic procedures significantly contributed reducing morbidity and mortality. Nonsurgical treatment of injuries of parenchymal organs is today's standard. Multidisciplinary approach is very important in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and includes pediatric surgeons, pediatricians, neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists and radiologists. However, the final decision to operate or is always surgical decision. |
