Popis: Radiation-induced damage of salivary glands is seen soon after the initiation of treatment and at relatively low doses. The mechanism of this is not understood yet. Objective: The purposes of this study were to examine the apoptosis and proliferartion of parenchymal cell populations in mouse submandibular gland after X-irradiation. Methods: Submandibular glands of male C57BL/6 mice were locally X-irradiated with single dose irradiation with 7, 5 Gy. Tissue were processed for paraffin embedding at 1, 3, 6 and 10 days after X-irradiation. The apoptosis and proliferation were investigated using TUNEL method and immunohistochemistry for proliferation cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in different gland compartments: acini, intercalated ducts and granular convoluted tubes. Results: At day 1 after irradiation, a significant decrease in PCNA-positive cells was noticed in different compartment of irradiated glands when compared to no irradiated glands (p
