It has been demonstrated previously that the tire-ice friction is characterized by a significant dynamic potential (DTFP) for abrupt transients of the wheel torque. The analysis has shown that the DTFP is predominantly caused by the bristle dwell time, which is defined as the time that the tire bristles (the tire elements) dwell in the tire-road contact patch. The effect is explained by the tire ability to imprint into the ice. Regardless of whether the tire is at standstill or it rotates, the bristles dwell for some time in the contact patch and adhere to fixed road points, thus causing the temporary imprinting effect. The higher the wheel center speed, the shorter the bristle dwell time, and the lower the DTFP. The paper deals with modeling of the Dynamic Tire Friction Potential (DTFP) and further experimental investigation for various road conditions and operating modes. The model is based on the LuGre tire friction model extended with the DTFP effect. The extension relies on the hypothesis that the DTFP is caused by the bristle dwell time effect. The model is parameterized based on the experimental data for tire force vs. slip static curve and DTFP vs. average bristle dwell time curve. The accuracy of the model is proven by experimental validation for various operating conditions. The experimental investigation is further extended for snow surfaces, and also ice surfaces with various ice condition/temperature are considered. The paper also presents an experimental analysis of a sliding contact based on locking tire on ice surface. |
