This paper addresses rehabilitation of ten quarries in the northern part of the Papuk Nature Park in eastern Croatia. Quarries are owned by the same owner which allowed an integral approach to quarry recovery. Due to the fact that examined quarries are in a nature preserved landscape, challenges in rehabilitation were bigger because of an extensive set of municipal and state legislation. The original topography has been significantly altered, the ecosystem has been removed, and biodiversity has been disrupted. Examined quarries varied in size, stages of exploitation and extracted material, all of which influenced the overall appearance of the mining pits. The paper presents criteria for integral rehabilitation, planning through landscape recovery with planned reuse and redevelopment of quarries as a unified complex. Treating the rehabilitation project as an ensemble of ten separated quarries as one, is new in quarry recovery practice. This method can be used for further reclamation projects. Landscape recovery is based on technical and biological recultivation. Planned reuse is a result of long term benefits primarily for the derelict land and consequently for the community. Mining activity in this area started more than 100 years ago and has been a generator of strong economic development. Reuse of the quarries as a geopark with leisure and recreational facilities should be an initiator of new economic development after the quarrying ends. |
