This paper explores discursive strategies of identity formation in the two contemporary Croatian novel developing the theme of returning to the place of childhood set in war nineties (Črna mati zemla) and in the post-transitional reality (Adio kauboju), a challenging periods for the new identity stories. In both novels a traumatic experience is related to the place of childhood, or birthplace, so it becomes a heterotopic space in which some "bad experience" is stored and carefully walled. Therefore, comeback to the provincial birthplace suggests chronotopic return to the "dark past", on a personal and collective level. |
