Routinely omitted from the music historiographies in the countries of former Yugoslavia, Roma musicians were, nevertheless, continually present in the urban music life and might have played a more significant role in the formation of different popular and folk music genres in the first half of the 20th century than previously acknowledged. Rare and scattered traces of their contribution to the musical practices, such as the early commercial recordings or occasional written sources, represent a challenge to contemporary researchers. This paper will present preliminary results of the ongoing research on the sources that reveal traces of the Roma musicians' participation in the musical life of the interwar Zagreb. Aside from the early sound recordings and the period press, the paper will provide insight into the literary works in which references to Roma musicians appear, as well as testimonies of concentration camp survivors appearing as rare testimonies of the systematic extermination of the Romani people during the Second World War, which included the musicians as well. |
