Popis: Physical activity is associated with decreased mortality and it is known to improve general quality of life. Positive effects of physical activity extend to pregnancy as well as the postpartum period. Pregnancy is associated with profound physiologic and anatomic changes and is often considered as a state of confinement. Contrary to conservative opinions, exercise in pregnancy is now considered as an ideal time for continuing healthy lifestyle established prior pregnancy, as well as initiating one while pregnant. An exercise program for postnatal women can produce many benefits that far outreach just physical conditioning. This paper summarizes knowledge on exercise impact on health of the expectant mother and the fetus, extending its reach to current practices and perceptions toward exercise in pregnancy and the postpartum period.
