Normal human sommatic cells in culture have a limited division potential. Their telomeres shorten with each subsequent division. When a critical telomere length is reached, cells enter senescence. Although HeLa is an immortal cell line, the existence of cells that do not divide has been well documentated. Despite of the existance of cells that do experience temporal growth arrest, a fraction of cells that enter permanent growth arrest does not exist in HeLa cell line. |
