The effects of the different exposure conditions on the electrochemical behaviour of CuNi10Fe alloy were evaluated in artificial seawater (AS) at 19°C with and without mixed culture of heterotrophic marine bacteria under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions during 6 days long measurements. This study was achieved by means of electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization, polarization resistance (Rp) measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results obtained by electrochemical measurements have indicated that the corrosion resistance of the examined alloy is better in sterile AS under anaerobic conditions than under aerobic ones. However, the addition of the mixed culture of heterotrophic marine bacteria to sterile AS under aerobic conditions led to an increase in the corrosion resistance due to formation of a protective biofilm. A similar tendency in the corrosion resistance behaviour was observed for the CuNi10Fe alloy during the first 24 hours of exposure to the mixed culture of heterotrophic marine bacteria under anaerobic conditions, but after that a decrease was observed in the corrosion resistance attributed to bacteria activity. Flow cytometry was used to count natural planktonic bacteria and quantification sub-populations of cells with apparent high DNA (HDNA) and apparent low DNA (LDNA) contents. The so-called HDNA bacteria correspond to the metabolically active fraction while LDNA bacteria, comprising dormant or dead cells, are usually characterized by significantly lower growth rates. |
