Istrian spur cordon is a widespread grapevine training system in Istrian region in recent years, where the vines have traditionally been head trained with one or two canes left during winter pruning, usually without renewal spurs. Until recently it was supposed that Istrian Malvasia, as an Istrian autochthonous grapevine variety and the most widespread grapevine variety in Istria is not fertile on basal buds and that pruning to canes is necessary in order to achieve economically sustainable yields. First field experiments with spur cordon training system in Istria began at the Institute of Agriculture and Tourism in the late 1980-ies, in order to evaluate if this training system is suitable for the agro-ecological conditions of Istria and to evaluate if the varieties traditionally cultivated in this region are suitable for spur pruning. After years of experiments on this training system, obtained results indicate that Istrian spur cordon produce satisfactory yields of good quality grapes. It is suitable for Istrian agro-ecological conditions, as well as for the most widespread grapevine varieties in Istria. In this study productive and quality characteristics of cv. Istrian Malvasia grown on Istrian spur cordon are presented. |
