Ammonia is the primary breakdown product of amino acids and it is synthesised within all organs.Nitrogen, generated in the form of ammonia from the metabolism of amino acids is usually excreted in the form of urea.Disturbances of urea synthesis, with subsequent hyperammonemia could be result of:-severe liver disease(usually chirrhosis or other conditions:high-dose chemotherapy, valproic acid therapy or multiple myeloma)or-genetic disorders. We measured ammonia concentrations in 20 patients(range 25-69μmol/L), treated with high-dose chemotherapy.Hyperammoniemia was observed among 14 patients(range 34-69μmol/L), with strong symptoms of vomiting. Our results could emphasise the need of monitoring ammonia concentration in different chemotherapy cycles. |
