Popis: A review is given of major problems concerning the pathology of more common diseases of farmed ostrichs in Croatia over the period 2000-2004. A dynamic development of African ostrich breeding (Struthio camelus) has been observed in the recent years all over the world. Although the birds can adapt easily to different climatic conditions, the various problems connected with the birds' acclimatization to new environmental and feeding conditions have been continually present in Croatian ostrich farms. Special mention is made of the diseases occuring due to technology errors (stomach impaction ; "generalized chick oedema" ; ascites - pulomonary hypertension syndrome /PHS/ ; allergic dermatitis, conjunctivitis and keratitis ; hyperkeratotic pododermatitis ; traumatic lesions), bacteriological diseases ("baby-chick" diseases /omphalitis, coli-sepsis, coli-enterotoxemia), and parasitological diseases (libyostrongylidosis /"rotten stomach"/ and leucocytozoonosis). Besides the avian pox no other viral infections were prooven. However, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas sp. infections in chicks immediately after hatching as well as Campylobacter sp., Shigella sp. and Clostridium sp. infections in adult birds, are a very important part of common ostrich pathology in Croatia.
