Popis: Species of the genus Allium are among the most important vegetables grown all over Croatia and around the world. Alliums are highly valued foods of high nutritional value, and due to secondary metabolites they are also used for plant protection through different products based on their bioactive components. In Croatia, there is a significant biological and morphological diversity of cultivated and wild Alliums. An extensive program of collecting and characterizing cultivated garlic and shallot was conducted in the past few years at the Institute of Agriculture and Tourism, Poreč. A high morphological, biochemical and molecular variability of the studied species has been determined, which can be used for breeding programs and cultivation.
