Nanoscale particles have bigger dispersion problems than micrometric in polymer applications. Poor performance diminishes the final dispersion of the compound and the inherent properties of the nanoparticles. Hence, nanoparticles must be functionalized in order to achieve the optimum dispersion within the polymer compounds and the highest performance of each nanoparticle properties. Functionalization of nanoparticles is improved by applying an optimum surface treatment to them. The surface functionalization of nanoparticles using different chemical agents achieves better dispersion within the polymer compounds. The improved dispersion of nanoparticles depends on various factors: type of chemical surface modifier agents, type of polymeric matrix, affinity of the functional groups, etc. Silver nanoparticles for antimicrobial applications are functionalized during the synthesis, with the reducer acting as a stabilizing and functionalizing agent. Zinc Oxide nanoparticles for UV protection applications are functionalized after synthesis with special surface treatments mainly to avoid photo-catalytic effect on the application. Magnesium Hydroxide nanoparticles for flame retardant applications are functionalized with additives such as stearic acid and silanes. |
