Popis: The penetration properties of offset printed paper are important in print quality formation. The penetration properties of starch-treated wood-free papers were clarified using test methods which operate under external pressure (imaging-based device Vihtori and capacitance-based device Clara) and without external pressure (Fotocomp Print, based on droplet absorption imaging). The results from capacitance-based device show how an increase in external pressure speeds up the penetration of water into papers. At 5 bar external pressure, the water penetration between the papers is very similar. At lower external pressure, the results of the capacitance and droplet-based absorption tests correlate well with each other. At 0.02 bar, for example, water penetration through different starch-treated papers varies. This is seen with both methods. The liquid penetration speed in the different depth of paper depends on the type of surface treatment starch derivative. With these measurements, we can obtain information about the effects of surface treatment on the penetration properties through the whole paper and how the starch treatment could change paper behaviour during the printing process.
