At least 16 different brachiopod taxa have been found from the Los Santos de Maimona basin(Badajoz, SW Spain) dissolving a silicified limestone of Upper Visean (Warnantian) age. Most of the specimens are small sized adults, although juvenile specimens and fragments of medium size individuals are also present. The micromorphic genera Lambdarina and Minythyra are conspicuous elements of this fauna. A species of Lambdarina, L. babini is described as new. Moreover the material in hand gives new information concerning M. metacarinata. The silicification of the fossils studied in this paper enables the observation of both internal and delicate external structures (such as apical ventral groove and clasping spines) seldom preserved in material which is not silicified. This fauna is very similar to that of the Upper Visean from County Fermanagh (Ireland). |
