There has been considerable interest in the use of narratives to assess the language development of young deaf children for some time, yet there have been no readily available resources to do this. This paper describes an innovative assessment procedure using stories (the Stories/Narratives Assessment Procedure (SNAP)) which records the development of the narrative skills of young deaf children. SNAP has been used to monitor such skills in the first three years after cochlear implantation. The use of SNAP is illustrated with profiles of a child at 12 and 36 months post‐implantation.
