The effect of added dietary fibre on bowel function and calcium balance has been studied in a group of elderly long-stay patients. The results show that a regime of a basic fibre-enriched diet with supplementary bran improves bowel habit in patients with chronic constipation and diarrhoea without effect on serum calcium, phosphate and alkaline phosphatase levels. Unacceptable gastrointestinal side effects had been encountered but did not occur when the supplementary bran was added at ward level. |
