Abstrakt: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the commonest malignancies in South East Asia and indeed worldwide. Despite the high prevalence of the disease, surgical resection, the only proven cure is an option for only a small proportion of patients, less than 20%. Liver cirrhosis is the most common cause of HCC and necessitates the preservation of as much liver as possible, resulting in local ablative techniques, intraarterial and systemic therapy providing an important treatment modality. This review article discusses the trials that exist between non-surgical treatment options for the treatment and palliation of HCC, as well as the rational and the mechanism of their use. It is hoped that through a better understanding of the current modalities available to surgeons in this complex disease that future trials and research will help develop both systemic and local therapy options.
