Novel formation of a phenylated isoquinolino[3′,4′:1,2][60]fullerene

Abstrakt: Reaction of C60Ph5Cl with cyanogen bromide results in replacement of the chlorine by BrCN and ring closure between the addend and an adjacent phenyl ring, giving a 1-bromoisoquinoline derivative of [60]fullerene; this readily undergoes nucleophilic replacement of Br by OH to give the corresponding 1-isoquinolone derivative.
