Abstrakt: Heat-capacity and enthalpy measurements by adiabatic calorimetry at temperatures T between 5 K and 430 K are reported for 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophenanthrene (Chemical Abstracts registry number [1013-08-7]). The triple-point temperature was determined and the enthalpy of fusion was measured. Two phase transitions in the solid state were observed and the transition temperatures and transition enthalpies were determined for each. Published heat capacities and derived thermodynamic functions for 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene (registry number [776-35-2]) are revised. Entropies and enthalpies for the condensed phases relative to T → 0 are reported for both compounds. An order-disorder mechanism is postulated for the phase transitions in 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophenanthrene. Copyright 1994, 1999 Academic Press
