•The application of the MDOF equivalent linear system in seismic analysis and design is reviewed.•An equivalent MDOF linear structure is developed with the same mass, stiffness, and modal damping ratios to capture nonlinear effects.•Equivalent modal damping ratios are explicitly defined as functions of the period, deformation levels, and soil characteristics of the structure.•These damping ratios facilitate seismic analysis and design of planar steel and reinforced concrete framed structures. |
