Abstract:The management of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (oohca) includes the activation of an emergency response team, basic life support treatment, and advanced life support interventions. Of these three areas of intervention, the first two demonstrate the most significant impact on positive outcome – namely, the activation of the emergency response team and basic interventions, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation. For the first time in many years, the science of resuscitation has progressed to the point that “the basics” of treatment are likely equivalent, if not superior, to the advanced interventions in terms of survival benefit. Such a strategy requires less intensive training, basic medical equipment, and fewer personnel. This enables resource-limited environments, as found in many developing countries such as St Kitts-Nevis, to provide appropriate emergency medical care for victims of cardiac arrest. |
