Abstrakt: Abstract:Why do some African Americans and some Black Caribbeans support and oppose affirmative action and preferential hiring and promotion? Do they support and oppose for the same or different reasons? Inasmuch as affirmative action and preferential hiring and promotion include Blacks among the intended beneficiaries, their support for these employment strategies is understandable. However, we endeavor to know not only why some support, but also why they oppose. Might their opinions be shaped by ethnicity, racial identity, or racial consciousness? Could variation be due to external forces like discrimination or to internal forces like holding negative stereotypes of each other and racial resentment? Is support based in part on realistic group conflict? Using ordered logit to analyze data from the 2004–2005 National Politics Study, our answers to these questions reveal that African Americans and Caribbean Blacks support and oppose for different reasons.
