•Artificial intelligence (AI) software is becoming widely available through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to holistically screen applicants to residency programs.•We found a limited agreement (7%) between AI-selected and PD-selected interview candidates.•AI has potential to aid in the residency applicant screening process but should not completely replace human review. |
