This study investigated the therapeutic feasibility of cognitive self-control manipulation of smoking behavior. It was predicated that a therapeutic approach, which emphasizes a cognitive stage that establishes and reinforces a self-control belief system and also includes a training stage in specific self-control procedures (stimulus control), will be more effective in maintaining a reduction in smoking than a treatment approach solely concerned with training in stimulus control. The study consisted of three groups with 18 smokers in each (kibbutz members). The groups were initially matched on relevant variables. In one group, expectation for inner control ability was created prior to the execution of the actual performance of self-control behavior. The second group underwent the training in the actual performance of self-control behavior. The third group served as a control group. The result shows that the Cognitive Self-Control group was significantly more effective in maintaining a reduction in smoking in almost all of the follow-up periods and, after 14 months, was unquestionably superior to the Stimulus-Control group. |
