Abstrakt: Abstract:In his fifteenth-century memoir, the Venetian patrician Giosafat Barbaro reflected on a pair of surprising turns in his friendships with Tatars and his experiences of identifying and being identified by them. These turns reflect a broader pattern of dynamic balance in the complex web of late medieval Tatar–Venetian power relations.
