Abstrakt: The intricate nature and diverse reservoir composition within the basal Messinian incision pose significant challenges in the Nile Delta basin. These complexities hinder the accurate prediction of connectivity between reservoirs and delineating their boundaries among wells, complicating the construction of a comprehensive geological model for the area. This study addresses these challenges by integrating sedimentological facies analysis with seismic geomorphology of the Qawasim Formation, deposited during the late Messinian period. Utilizing integrated 3D seismic data, core samples, wireline logs, and borehole image logs from five wells in the Balsam field, we identify six lithofacies types within the Qawasim Formation, which are categorized into five facies associations: fluvial channels, tidally influenced fluvial channels, tidal channels, tidal bars, and tidal flats within an estuarine regime. These facies associations form the foundational elements for the depositional model. The model identifies two primary cycles: the bottom cycle, comprising fluvial channels surrounded by overbank muds on a fluvial plain (designated as Qawasim level 1), and the top cycle, encompassing an estuarine system with tidal channels and estuarine tidal bars surrounded by tidal muds (designated as Qawasim level 2). Detailed seismic interpretation has been employed to study the geomorphological features of the Qawasim Formation’s levels. Integrating sedimentological and seismic attributes reveals that the Qawasim Formation in the Balsam field indicates fluvial–tidal deposition within a broader estuarine context. This significant study clarifies the Lower Messinian deposits’ depositional environment and filling architecture. Besides, it is a part of the most crucial period for building the stratigraphic column of the Nile Delta in general and for improving hydrocarbon exploration and production strategies in the surrounding blocks of Balsam field.
