Abstrakt: The structure of soils is crucial for the diverse soil functions. Natural fertility of arable soils is significantly affected by soil structure via various processes and their interactions. In this review we provide an overview of the mutual interactions of structure and function in agricultural soils, specifically on how soil structure affects different soil functions, and, vice versa, of how agricultural management practices impact soil structure. We summarize the developments in quantifying the structural complexity using modern 3D imaging tools and how these tools can be used to model structure–function relations and the temporal dynamics of soil structural properties. A key conclusion is that although we have powerful technical capabilities to quantify the arrangement of pores and solids at different scales, there are still significant shortcomings in how this structural information can be linked to processes and soil functions. A particular challenge is to simulate the temporal dynamics of soil structural properties in response to external drivers based on appropriate mechanistic model concepts.
