Abstrakt: This continuing education article examines Halldorsdottir’s (1996) theory of caring and uncaring behaviors within nursing and healthcare and explores the five basic modes of being with another: Biogenic or life-giving mode; bioactive or life-sustaining mode of being; biopassive or life-neutral mode of being; biostatic or life-restraining mode of being; and biocidic or life-destroying (or life hurting) mode of being with another. The modes function within the theory as a continuum of caring and uncaring dimensions that clients experience as recipients of nurse caring. The metaphorical abstractions in Halldorsdottir’s theory, the bridge and the wall, are discussed in relation to client care, as are applications of the formulation to nursing education, administration, and research.
