Immersive technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) open up exciting approaches to make even complex geological concepts and processes accessible to a wider audience. In tourist destinations, which often feature geological peculiarities, these technologies can contribute not only to education but also enhance the visitor experience. This report examines the developments and potentials of immersive technologies in terms of their implementation in geoinformation, explained through exemplary applications. The focus will be on geoinformation in tourist destinations with travellers as the target audience. While the applications considered show promising approaches, the potential of these technologies has not yet been fully tapped. The limited spread of immersive AR and VR applications in geo-communication at tourist destinations can be explained by a combination of technical challenges, high costs, required expertise, user acceptance, and the established alternative of less complex but effective multimedia applications. |
