This study investigates the undrained bearing capacity and failure mechanisms of strip footings embedded in non-homogeneous clay layers subjected to eccentric vertical loads, addressing the stability concerns associated with eccentric loading conditions commonly encountered in the foundations of buildings, retaining walls, and bridge abutments. The study examines the influence of critical factors, including eccentric loading, interface effects, and depth ratio (D/B), on the bearing capacity of both the surface and embedded strip footings. Employing elastoplastic finite element analyses of the Tresca soil model, the study compares its results using existing literature to evaluate the impact of these factors on the undrained bearing capacity of perfectly rough and smooth strip footings. The results demonstrate that these factors significantly influence the undrained bearing capacity, highlighting the importance of considering these variables in geotechnical design. |
