In recent years, the potential of using microalgae as a renewable resource in wastewater has increased worldwide. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects and efficiency of Chaetoceros sp.microalgae biofilter in urban wastewater treatment. Algae performance was examined in eliminating physicochemical and microbial parameters during a 7-day period at retention times of 0, 24, 48, 72, 100 and 168 h. Three biofilters were tested at the same time with the same conditions, and the results were very close and similar. Therefore, the average results of the biofilters were checked, and the analysis of the results was done using SPSS software and one-way ANOVA test. LSD post hoc test was used to investigate the effects of Chaetoceros sp.microalgae on the study parameters and to determine the details of the differences between retention times. The results of variance analysis of microalgae species in biofilters have shown significant results of the effects of microalgae species and retention time on the treatment of wastewater entering biofilters. There was a significant difference between the input and output in terms of average and retention time of all research parameters except temperature and pH (P< 0.05). Moreover, the results showed that the Chaetoceros sp. microalgae biofilter was able to remove COD, BOD, turbidity, phosphate, lead, mercury, iron, cadmium, total coliform and fecal coliform equal to 81%, 79%, 73%, 85%, 91%, 83%, 86%, 92%, 95% and 96%, respectively. Finally, Chaetoceros sp. microalgae biofilter was introduced as an efficient species to reduce urban sewage pollution. |
