•A versatile VPSA pilot able to perform two and three bed cycles was developed.•Performance of the benchmark material zeolite 13X and MIL-160(Al) were evaluated.•Classical adsorbent metrics failed to predict the best adsorbent for this cycle.•Higher purity and recovery for MIL-160(Al) than zeolite 13X between 0.1 and 2 bar. |
