Abstrakt: ABSTRACT:Chad is a very poor country due to historical and geographic circumstances as well as excessive corruption. Yet, despite these problems, it has been considered to be strategically important since the Cold War to the big powers as well as countries close by in the Middle East. Chad's leaders have faced continued internal opposition as well as periodic external interventions from Libya and Sudan, have even used those neighbouring countries as bases and/or sources of support to achieve power or to hold on to it. Events that affected Libya and Sudan have raised security concerns for Egypt. Unlike other states in the Sahel region Chad has not faced severe security threats from jihadi groups; nevertheless, since the 1990s Chad's leadership has made use of those situations in neighbouring countries to solicit aid from outside powers such as France and the United States, despite the fact that historically internal opposition has been due to regional, ethnic or interpersonal rivalries.
