•MnWO4/WO3 film composites were formed by one-step PEO in homogeneous electrolytes.•The W:Mn ratio in coatings is greater than the W:Mn ratio in the electrolyte.•All coatings are active in the UV–visible region of the spectrum.•Photoactivity of the composites is related to charge separation and large •OH number. |
