Abstrakt: An extensive programme of tests on 18Mn-4Cr steels has been carried out in hydrogen environments to provide data for the design of turbine generator end-rings operating in hydrogen. The threshold conditions for crack initiation and propagation have been defined by testing under rising load in hydrogen sulphide, and up to 20000h under static load in hydrogen. The elastically calculated surface strain has been shown to be a convenient parameter for defining the conditions for hydrogen-assisted crack initiation at notches in specimens and components. The behaviour of notched and precracked specimens under rising load conditions in hydrogen sulphide provides a lower bound to time-dependent static-load behaviour in hydrogen. Although a considerable range of susceptibility to hydrogen-assisted cracking is evident in the 18Mn–4Cr steels tested, correlations with strength level or with microstructural or fractographic features are not apparent.
