•We describe the first case of group A Streptococcus (GAS) M1UKcausing CAP, empyema, and STSS.•The M1UKGAS was resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin.•The M1UKGAS carried genes encoding for antibiotic efflux pumps and virulence factors.•The M1UKGAS carried a polymorphism which enhances expression of SpeA.•Genomic surveillance studies are urgent to assess the spread of M1UKstrains in invasive GAS disease. |
