The present work involves the preparation of E-glass reinforced with epoxy thermosets modified with calcium ino silicate mineral filler. Introducing filler in the varied fraction by weight percentage of 1, 3, 5 and 7% through hand layup route keeping the volume fraction of reinforcement and matrix ratio to 60:40. Thermal analysis has been done to assess the glass transition temperature range of glass fibre composite filled with and without filler. Keeping the reported glass transition range, thermal ageing of samples has been done for three different set of temperature conditions such as room temperature (31 °C), continuous heating cycle of + 50 °C and cooling cycle of −5 °C for the duration of 168 h to assess the thermal response of GFRP composites when subjected to impact loading conditions. Continuing to this, impact testing of IZOD type was conducted for all the prepared samples using digital pendulum impact tester to investigate the amount of energy absorbed and impact strength of the samples exposed to different temperature conditions. It is observed that inclusion of filler influences greatly on impact behaviour of composites and also thermal ageing of the samples affects the energy absorption and fracture mode of the composites. Finally, microscopic examination was done for the fractured samples to witness the failure mode of composites subjected to varied filler composition and exposed to different temperature conditions. |
