Abstrakt: An open cylindrical container of water with an aspect ratio of 1.3 with independently controlled side and bottom heating was used to simulate a gadolinium gallium garnet Czochralski growth melt. It is shown that the “wheel spoke” pattern visible on garnet and other oxide melts also is present in a pure water simulation bath. The surface nature of the pattern has been confirmed and the details of the flow structure revealed. The possible role of surface tension driven flow on the surface flow pattern is also discussed.
