Abstrakt: The rate of breakdown of protective films of iron sulphide produced by reaction of biogenic sulphide with the iron has been shown to be proportional to the iron concentration in the medium. After film breakdown, the rate of corrosion is also proportional to the iron concentration. Film breakdown appears to be associated with the transformation of protective mackinawite films to minor smythite and minor pyrrhotite, rather than to greigite.
