Abstrakt: It is generally stated that the role of radiology in the diagnosis of Mallory-Weiss syndrome is to exclude any other lesion. Correct pre-operative diagnosis was established in two patients by selective coeliac arteriography. The diagnostic principle of arteriography in the actively bleeding patient is to demonstrate the point of contrast medium (blood) extravasation. This examination is independent of the depth, size and location of the bleeding point, or of the presence of food or blood clot in the viscus. It is the examination of choice if a Mallory-Weiss syndrome is suspected. By using arteriography the radiologist can reach the correct preoperative diagnosis in patients bleeding from Mallory-Weiss lesions. This significantly improves the survival rate of such patients.
