Non-malignant masses in the caecum are rare, and are usually diagnosed as malignant, leading to radical surgery—usually a right hemi-colectomy. The radiological, macroscopic and colonoscopic appearances of endometriosis of the caecum also often suggest malignancy. The diagnosis however may be suspected in a woman of child-bearing age with typical symptoms. Colonic lesions can also occur in post-menopausal women, and cause symptoms (Morson and Dawson, 1979).A 38-year-old woman was referred for a barium enema examination for investigation of abdominal pain and diarrhoea of six months' and two months' duration respectively. On closer questioning, the patient related her symptoms to her menstrual cycle. |
