Abstrakt: Neural tube defects are common causes of fetal abnormality and may be diagnosed antenatally. Encephalocoeles are less common than spinal abnormalities and have a ratio of 1:5 in Matson's clinic (Matson, 1969).The average incidence of spina bifida cystica amongst live births is approximately 2.5 to 2.7 per 1000. There is an increased familial incidence for any neural tube abnormality. Polyhydramnios may be the first presenting feature. Ultrasound and plain film radiography should reveal or suggest most of these defects; feto-amniography is only indicatedwhere amniocentesis would be done for other reasons or where ultrasound and radiology are negative and fetal foregut anomaly is suspected.
