One hundred and eighty consecutive patients referred for oral cholecystography were allocated in a random fashion to one of three groups. On the evening prior to the cholecystogram the patients in the different groups took a fatfree meal, high-fat meal, or normal meal of their own choosing, respectively. The cholecystograms were assessed without the author being aware of the groups to which the patients belonged. There was no statistical difference in the incidence of failed cholecystograms or of pathology demonstrated in the different groups. It is concluded that the content of the meal on the evening prior to oral cholecystography does not influence the examination. It is therefore recommended that patient preparation can be simplified by not restricting the size or content of that meal. |
