Abstrakt: The use of radioactive yttrium (90Y) silicate and yttrium resin as suitable substances for the treatment of chronic knee effusions has been discussed. The leakage of radioisotope following intraperitoneal injections into Fischer rats has been followed and shown to be greater with the silicate preparation than with the resin. Similar results were obtained following intra-articular injection into the knee joints of a series of patients with chronic rheumatoid effusions. There was a rapid removal of both preparations from the synovial fluid to the lining of the joints, but the silicate preparation then leaked to other parts of the body. The resin remained localised, as indicated by low blood, urine and faeces activities and by long-term whole-body profile scanning. We therefore consider the resin to be the most suitable substance for clinical use.
