Comparative study on design of earth retaining structures for bridges

Abstrakt: For a country’s economic growth and globalization, transportation plays an important role. A major way of transportation in India is road transportation which provides connectivity of cities. Bridges and culverts are constructed to surpass the rivers. Earth retaining structures are commonly used to retain the materials at the approaches of bridges and culverts. This study is essentially related to find the economically and functionally suitable retaining wall structure commonly used in bridges. Manual design of retaining wall structures is carried out, by preparing MS excel spreadsheets, and compared them with regards to each other in order to get most economical sections and types. In present study, box type return wall found to more economical for greater heights and solid return wall for shorter heights.
