Abstrakt: Standardized radiographs were made to analyze quantitative values of bone mineral in a longitudinal study. The quantitative density values of the interdental bone were measured with a densitometer on radiographs. A comparison was made between the density (blackening) as produced by a simultaneously exposed Aluminum calibrating wedge and the points of interest on the radiograph. The radiographic bone densities were expressed in equivalents of mm Aluminum (Al eq values). The total experimental error from the positioning of the radiographs and the microdensitometric procedure was determined and a variation coefficient of 4% was found. To test the usefulness of this method a patient with periodontal disease was selected. In this single case the radiographs did not show visible changes after 21 months, whereas a significant decrease in Al eq values could be detected in the top of the interdental alveolar bone mesial and distal of a selected mandibular molar. The method seems promising for evaluating the response of the alveolar bone after various kinds of periodontal treatment.
